Dual Degree: Bachelors + Master of Business Administration (MBA)

A Richard J. Bolte, Sr. School of Business Bachelor’s to Master’s Dual Degree Program is available for qualified accounting, business administration, economics, entrepreneurship, and sport management students who are interested in earning both a bachelor’s and master’s degree. With this Program, students may be eligible to save on tuition for up to three graduate courses (9 credits). No more than nine credits of graduate courses applied to the bachelor’s degree may be counted also for graduate credit in an individual student’s program. Courses to be double-counted must be 500 level or above and must be passed with at least a “B-” grade. Graduate courses taken while an undergraduate will substitute as general elective courses in their undergraduate major program. Individual study courses, internships, or courses given as credit by examination are not eligible. The credits to be double counted will be designated as applicable to the graduate program of study after the student receives the bachelor’s degree and matriculates in the Graduate School.

Students must apply for admission to the Richard J. Bolte, Sr. School of Business MBA or MSSM graduate programs and to the Bachelor’s to Master’s Dual Degree Program once they have completed 60 credits of undergraduate coursework (typically during the first semester of year three). Admitted students may begin taking graduate-level courses once they have completed 75 credits of undergraduate coursework (typically during their second semester of year three and year four). The bachelor’s and master’s degree programs are designed to blend seamlessly, giving students in the Bachelor’s to Master’s Dual Degree Program a powerful education in a shorter period of time.

Bachelor’s to Master’s Dual Degree Program Admission Requirements

  • Have and maintain a minimum overall 3.0 GPA. Students must maintain a 3.0 minimum GPA while in the Bachelor’s to Master’s Dual Degree Program
  • Minimum of 60 completed credits at time of application. 
  • Complete the Bachelor’s to Master’s Dual Degree Program Application. Please contact your undergraduate advisor for information about the application process and the link to the application.
  • Formal admissions to the Graduate School will require completion of all requirements for the bachelor’s degree.

Application deadline for fall is June 1 and Spring deadline is December 1.

Qualified students in other majors may participate in the Richard J. Bolte, Sr. School of Business Bachelor’s to Master’s Dual Degree Program with permission from the department chair and the graduate program director or associate dean.

Richard J. Bolte, Sr. School of Business Dual Degree

The Mount’s business dual degree program provides the skills needed to advance your career and gain an edge in your field of study.

A minimum of 120 credit hours is required for a Bachelor of Science in Business, followed by 36 credits for the Master of Business Administration or Master of Science in Sport Management.

Students earning 120 credit hours in a Bachelor of Science in Accounting, Economics, Entrepreneurship, or Sport Management may also apply to the Dual Degree program.

The Dual Degree Program in Business is designed for students interested in advancing their career and gaining an edge in a field of study.

The dual degree program provides a 4+1 pathway to earning a B.S. in accounting, business, economics, entrepreneurship, or sport management, and a Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree preparing you to apply your skills in the business world in the areas of accounting, finance, human resources, international business, management, marketing, sales, sport management, and more.

There are two phases to the Dual Degree program:

Phase I:  Students pursing the dual degree pathway will enroll at the MSMU Emmitsburg (main) campus to pursue their BS degree in business or one of the other business pathways, accounting, economics, entrepreneurship, or sport management.  Completion of the BS degree requires a minimum of 120 credits and fulfilling the requirements of the both the core curriculum and major.

In addition, students will use their B.S. degree electives to take pre-requisites for MBA courses, if not already part of the major: ACCT 101 Accounting Principles I (3) ,ACCT 102 Accounting Principles II (3) ,ECON 101 Foundations of Economics: Macroecon (3) ,ECON 102 Foundations of Economics: Microecon (3) , BUS 320 Statistics (3) , and BUS 360 Corporate Finance I (3) . Pre-requisites are not requirements for acceptance in the MBA program, but the pre-requisites listed (or equivalents) are needed to take specific courses needed to earn the MBA degree.

Students will apply for acceptance into the dual degree program once they have completed 60 credits of undergraduate coursework (typically during the fall semester of year three) and begin phase II by transitioning into the MBA program once their advisor and MBA program director has verified they are on track with their undergraduate major. have completed 75 credits of undergraduate coursework (typically during the second semester of year three and continuing in year four).

Phase II During the second half of year three or at the start of year four, students will complete major requirements for the BS and begin course work in the Master’s program.  Our flexible course format allows students on the main campus to attend graduate classes, held on our Emmitsburg or Frederick campuses, either in person, via web conferencing, or online.   Students begin taking only graduate courses in the summer between years four and five with all graduate course work offered either in person at our Emmitsburg or Frederick campuses, via web conferencing, or online.

Application Process and Timeline:

Students interested in pursuing dual degree will indicate their interest to their academic advisor prior to their third year.  Formal application to the program will occur during phase I, once they have completed 60 credits of undergraduate coursework (typically in fall of the 3rd year) with an application deadline of December 1.  Eligible students will have a 3.0 or higher overall GPA. and completed 75 credits by the end of the first semester of the third year.

*Students pursuing a Bachelor’s to Master’s Dual Degree Program and are planning to sit for the CPA exam, must ensure they have earned the required 150 credit hours necessary to sit for the state licensure exam. Verification that the state licensure body will accept double-counted credits is required.

To earn a Bachelor of Science in Business, students must complete a minimum of 120 credit hours. Students must also earn a major GPA of 2.0, and a cumulative GPA of 2.0.

Students applying to the MBA Dual Degree Program must have an overall GPA of 3.0 and are required to maintain a 3.0 GPA throughout the program. Students must also meet the credit requirement of 60 credits by the end of year two, 75 credits by the end of the first semester of year three and continue to meet the yearly credit requirements.
