More information about the Department of History :

A minimum of 120 credit hours is required for a Bachelor of Art in History.

History Electives (21 Credits)


History majors must complete 21 elective credits in history, including each of the categories below.

Non-Western History (3 credits)


This course will also count for the core Global Encounters requirement.

Internship (0-6 credits)


The history department requires history majors to complete an internship in their intended professional field.  The internship does not need to be credit-bearing.  Consult your advisor for more information.

Other History Electives (0-12)


The following courses also count toward the history degree.  Students may not need to take courses in this category to reach 21 total history elective credits.

Complete either 6 credits at the 101 and 102 level or 3 credits at the 200 level or above

The Ethical Leadership Experiential Learning Core Requirement invites students to integrate their own personal call to leadership with a mature reflection on one or more of the core virtues of Justice, Courage, Integrity, and Humility.  Students will accomplish this by engaging in and reflecting upon the practice of virtue ethics within the context of one or more experiential learning activities.

Teacher Certification


The Education Department offers a social studies/education major. The program prepares students wishing to teach at the secondary level, grades 7-12. The History Department collaborates with the Education Department to offer the history courses needed for certification. Admission requirements for the program are described in the School of Education .

Note


To earn a Bachelor of Art in History, students must complete a minimum of 120 credit hours. Students must also earn a major GPA  of 2.0, and a cumulative GPA of 2.0.

Any student contemplating graduate work should understand that most history graduate programs involve the knowledge of foreign languages. Especially if you aim at a College or University teaching career, you should consult with one of the history faculty to discuss what languages you will likely have to know, and begin the study of those languages as an undergraduate.
