More information about the Department of English :

A minimum of 120 credit hours is required for a Bachelor of Arts in English.

The major in English requires 36 credits. Majors take 9 credits in preparatory courses, 27 credits in advanced. The preparatory courses are ENGL 160 Introduction to Literary Studies (3) , ENGL 261 British Literature Survey (3) , and ENGL 262 American Literature Survey (3) . The 27 advanced credits consist of 9 courses to be taken at the 300 level, including 1 course in the literature of Britain and Europe (3), 1 course (3) in American literature; ENMO 300 Modernity in Literature (3) ; ENGE 3XX (3); ENGL 498 English Senior Seminar (3) ; and 4 electives at the 300 level. In addition to the 3 preparatory courses, majors may substitute one additional ENGL 100-level or 200-level elective for one 300-level elective,excluding period and national/cultural requirements. In addition, 3-credits earned in an internship through the English Department (ENGL 480 Internship (1-3) ) may count toward the major.

Students who major in English may choose one of three optional Emphases. The Emphases are designed to give students additional opportunities for professional development in fields related to the English major. Each Emphasis is comprised of 12 additional credits in required and elective courses, as described below. Other electives may also be selected in consultation with the chair of the Department of English .

  • one course in a modern language at the 200-level or higher (3 credits, required);

The Ethical Leadership Experiential Learning Core Requirement invites students to integrate their own personal call to leadership with a mature reflection on one or more of the core virtues of Justice, Courage, Integrity, and Humility.  Students will accomplish this by engaging in and reflecting upon the practice of virtue ethics within the context of one or more experiential learning activities.

Certification in Secondary Education


In lieu of general electives, English Majors may pursue Certification in Secondary Education offered through the Division of Education. For requirements, see Certification in Secondary Education (Grades 7-12) .

Note


To earn a Bachelor of Arts in English, students complete a minimum of 120 credit hours. Students must also earn a major GPA of 2.0, and a cumulative GPA of 2.0.
