A minimum of 120 credit hours is required for the Bachelor of Science in Human Services.

The Human Services program at the Mount provides a state-of-the-art educational experience for students interested in the human helping professions. This degree completion program is designed for adult learners who desire to work in community organizations and agencies that assist individuals, families, and communities in solving problems and reaching their full potential. Drawing upon several academic traditions- primarily sociology, psychology, education, and business-this program combines cutting edge theory, research findings, and practical experience to give students the knowledge and skills they need to work in fields that include mental health, youth/family, aging, addictions, and administration of social service programs.

Student Learning Outcomes

After successfully completing the B.S. in Human Services program, graduates will:

  • be able to identify, differentiate, and critically evaluate the various biopsychosocial factors that influence human behavior;
  • possess and employ appropriate interpersonal skills needed to work effectively with people seeking assistance in a human service context;
  • be able to formulate, evaluate, and execute ethical decision making in a human service context; and
  • be committed to “meeting people where they are” and ensuring the people they work with, no matter their background and identity, are treated with respect and dignity;
  • understand the importance of and be committed to the practice of self-care so that they are healthy and well-adjusted human services professionals.

Major Requirements


36 Credits:

Human Services Electives (9 Credits)


Additional elective courses may also count toward the Human Services major or minor; consult with the program’s director.  6 of the 9 credits of Human Services Electives must be completed at Mount St. Mary’s University.

Core Humanities Requirements (12 Credits)


Complete 12 total credits and each of the subcategories in the Core Humanities Group

  • ​​Core Arts, Lang, Lit Requirement (3 credits).  Choose one of the following: 
    • BUS 260 Business Communication (3)

      • Global Encounters courses are offered in many departments, including Business, Communication, Foreign Language, History, Philosophy, Political Science, Sociology and Theology.
  • Additional Humanities Course (3 Credits)
    • Students must complete one additional humanities course from any of the above categories in order to reach 12 total credit hours.  Some courses may double count between the above categories, but students must reach 12 total in order to complete the requirement.
