ENGL 352 - American Stand-up Comedy

Credits: (3)
This course will examine the history, poetics, and politics of American stand-up comedy. For the history, we will walk decade by decade from Mark Twain to figures like Chris Rock. For the poetics we will examine the overlap between oral and written linguistic art forms. And for the politics, we will explore the issues that arise in stand-up comedy around questions of race, gender, and sexuality. The course satisfies the American Literature requirement in the English major.
