PSCI 206 - Comparative Politics

This course is designed to serve as an introduction and overview of the field of comparative politics. Students are expected to garner an understanding of the main areas of study in comparative politics as well as engage with these themes in the context of several country examples. First, the course will address some of the main objectives and methods in comparative politics, as well as primary components of nation states, party systems, and electoral institutions. Following this, students will be introduced to literature on democratization and democracy, allowing the opportunity to define, detail, and compare these two concepts. Lastly, the lectures on regime type and political institutions will assess the role that different institutions play in different regime contexts, and the consequences of this.
