CHEM 201 - Organic Chemistry I Credits: (4) An introduction to the chemistry of the compounds of carbon-containing molecules, with emphasis on functional groups. Study of the structure, reactivity and synthesis of organic molecules; the mechanism of specific reactions; introductory instrumental techniques; and introductory biochemistry. Development of laboratory technique to synthesize, isolate and characterize organic compounds. CHEM 201 also introduces biochemical molecules’ structure and simple reactivity as well. Lecture and lab. Students attempting to take this course for a third time need the permission of the Chair of the Science Department to register. Prerequisite(s): CHEM 101 General Chemistry I (4) -CHEM 102 General Chemistry II (4) must also be passed with a minimum grade of C- or higher. Fall Only
