PSCI 129 - Dictatorship: Could It Happen Here?

This course will examine the politics of dictatorships. It will cover different types of dictatorships and the conditions under which they emerge and fall. It will also discuss how dictatorships use repression, censorship, social media, and other institutional tools to maintain control and power. The course will also explore the China Model of governance, and whether the China Model can be a viable alternative to democracy in terms of economic growth, political legitimacy, and good governance. Finally, the course will examine the quality of democratic governance in the United States. Could dictatorship happen in the United States? This is an introductory course open to all majors.
