PSCI 128 - Music and Politics

This is an introductory level course designed for first year students who may or may not be majoring in political science. This course aims to build a connection between music and politics. First, we will examine how music affects politics. In this regard, we will discuss questions such as: How is music used to mobilize the masses for political causes? How does music affect political communication and the political representation of marginalized groups? How is music utilized to create history? How does music help express political experience? Second, we will discuss how politics affects the production and spread of music. In this vein, we will seek to understand how the state censors music and how politics affects the taste, ideas, and ideology of music. In this course, students have an opportunity to learn about and listen to music from different countries worldwide
