SPAN 321 - Arte Espanol

This course provides a panoramic overview of Spanish artistic expression from the paintings of the prehistoric Caves of Altamira to the avant-garde artists of the twentieth century. We will study artistic representations from the major civilizations that passed through Spain and explore the architecture of the Moorish palaces and mosques of Al-Andalus. Special attention is given to the art and culture of the Siglos de oro as exemplified in the paintings of El Greco, Murillo, and Velázquez, as well as paintings from Spain’s greatest Romantic painter, Goya. An analysis of other great masters of painting such as Picasso, Miró, and Dalí, and their great works, is a reflection of the vast tapestry of art makes up Spanish culture. Prerequisite(s): SPAN 301 or Equivalent
