Have you ever wondered why Reggaeton is so popular nowadays? Did you know that Brazil’s former president, Jair Bolsonaro, is considered the Donald Trump of Latin America? What sparked the massive protests in Chile (2019) and Colombia (2020)? What are the causes of the massive Latin American migration to the Global North in the past decades? These and other questions addressing current Latin American topics are the main drivers of this class. This is a course that explores the history of contemporary events in Latin America, through a careful examination of their historical roots. It is a fascinating way to understand the present by traveling back in time. (This is a class taught in English).
