ENGL 133 - The Bible as Literature

Credits: (3)
It is hard to overestimate the importance of the Jewish and Christian Scriptures to global civilization. For thousands of years, the books of the Bible served as the foundations for major world religions, and have shaped the hearts, minds, and imaginations of generations of human beings, the world over, for thousands of years. This course studies the books of the Bible as works of literature, with distinctive histories, generic discourses, myths/plots, characters, thought, and diction. The focus of the course is gaining a deeper knowledge and appreciation of the Bible, but it will also consider new literary works inspired by Biblical narratives, from the Middle Ages through the current era, with a special eye to Biblical art in a Global context.
