SOC 223 - Leadership and Wellness Credits: (3) In our ever rapidly-paced and challenging world, “leadership and organizational structures are proving inadequate to deal with the changing reality that is complex, multidimensional, and virtual.” The course is premised on the idea that “Leadership signifies a complex moral relationship between people, based on trust, mutuality, commitment, and a shared vision of the good of the broader society.” The course embarks to show how holistic leadership, the need for leaders who are “authentic, principled, and spiritually grounded are needed more than ever. It commences with an axiom that the universe is not amoral; it has a structural bias for the good.” At the physical, mental, emotional, moral, and spiritual level we have always been seeking wholeness. For this reason, the journey of Leadership & Wellness draws on both science and art in its attempt to provide an integrated approach involving self, spirit and service. These goals are coordinated with the Mount’s strategic plan to form ethical leaders who live lives of significance. A specific aspect of the course is the subject of wellness, a vital state for those who lead. Any form of human service requires health to achieve its goals. While the course provides an opportunity to delve into a knowledge and skill set of the basis of effective leadership, and its understanding of these will in itself reduce stress, specific exercises that support holistic wellness will be examined and exercised.
