A minimum of 120 credit hours is required for a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics.

Major Requirements

Certification in Secondary Education


Mathematics majors can meet the requirements of Maryland and many other states for certification in teaching secondary-level mathematics. Majors who elect this program fulfill the same requirements as other mathematics majors. For required education courses, see Certification in Secondary Education (Grades 7-12)  .

Note


To earn a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics, students must complete a minimum of 120 credit hours. Students must also earn a major GPA of 2.0, and a cumulative GPA of 2.0.

 

At most three credits of Practicum CMSCI 492 Practicum (1-3)  or CMSCI 493 Practicum (1-3)  may be applied toward the B.S. in mathematics. Students planning to attend graduate school in mathematics are encouraged to take MATH 447 Introduction to Real Analysis (3) .

It can be taken in the sophomore, junior, or senior year. MATH 364 Linear Algebra (3)  and MATH 468 Algebraic Structures (3)  are offered in the spring of even years. It is recommended that MATH 364 Linear Algebra (3)   be taken as early as possible after the freshman year and that MATH 468 Algebraic Structures (3)  not be taken until junior or senior year.
