Our mission statement enjoins us to strive to graduate men and women who “respect the dignity of other persons, who see and seek to resolve the problems facing humanity, and who commit themselves to live as responsible citizens.”The minor in African and African American Studies, in concert with the Core curriculum, contributes to this mission by exposing students to classes that:

  • Cover past and current economic, social and political inequalities
  • Cover past and current structures and ideologies of oppression (especially racism and white supremacy), and that
  • Enhance students’ respect for the dignity of others by exposing them to the literatures, music and art of Africa and African Americans.
  • Understand the diversity of human cultures in a global community, to see and seek to respond to all in that community with justice and solidarity, to protect human dignity, to work for peace and freedom, and to respect the integrity of creation.
