Core Requirements (46 to 49 credits)

Major Requirements

39 credits:

Audition for Music Concentration

To be eligible for a concentration in music, all students must audition before a panel of music faculty. This audition will determine one of three possible programmatic focuses: performance, traditional music scholarship, or general studies in the fine arts. Ideally, students will audition during or before Freshman Orientation, but no later than the end of the second semester of the sophomore year. A second, follow-up audition can be scheduled as necessary. Transfer students will be afforded the opportunity to audition in their first semester of study.

For more information about the audition requirements, please contact the Department of Visual and Performing Arts.

Requirements in Applied Music Instruction for Majors

All students, regardless of audition results, will complete the requirements in applied music instruction.

  • Majors may elect only one semester in their primary instrument or in voice at the 100 level.
  • For courses in the 200 level, students will perform a jury before a panel of music faculty at the end of each semester. A public performance is optional but strongly recommended at the 200 level.
  • For courses in the 300 level, both a jury and public performance are required.
  • A passing grade in the course is required before students can advance from 200 to 300 level.
  • Courses at the 200 or 300 levels may be repeated as necessary.
  • Majors may enroll in more than one 100 level course in any instrument or voice other than their primary.
  • For majors with a performance focus, a performance component is required for the FAMU 402 Senior Project. Applied lessons at the 300 level for this project will be taken concurrently enrollment in FAMU 402.

Ensembles

Notes on Ensembles
• 4 credits of ensembles are required by the end of four years.
• Ensemble credits do not incur an additional credit charge regardless of the student’s credit load.
• Although only 4 credits of ensemble are required, majors are highly encouraged to enroll every semester.

Senior Project

All majors are required to present a senior project during the final semester that displays aspects of the theoretical and practical knowledge gained through their course of study. The senior project requires enrollment in FAMU 402 Senior Project Tutorial (3) . Guidelines for the senior project must be obtained from the department chair or a departmental advisor in the first semester of the senior year.

Electives

31 to 33 Credits

“Elective” refers to various Theatre and Visual and Performing Arts courses, as well as to elective courses offered outside of the department. Suggested electives can include courses in Communications, English, Foreign Languages and Literatures, and History, based on the talents and skills of the student, as well as through consultation with the student’s academic advisor. Students are also strongly urged to investigate Internship possibilities, either in the summer or as a semester-long assignment. The Career Center catalogs a wide variety or arts-based internships.

Note
