More information about College of Liberal Arts :

A minimum of 120 credit hours is required for a Bachelor of Arts in English.

The major in English requires 36 credits. Majors take 9 credits in preparatory courses, 27 credits in advanced. The preparatory courses are ENGL 160 Introduction to Literary Studies (3) , ENGL 261 British Literature Survey (3) , and ENGL 262 American Literature Survey (3) . The 27 advanced credits consist of 9 courses to be taken at the 300 level, including 2 courses in the literature of Britain and Europe (1 course before 1650, 1 course after 1650); 2 courses in American literature; ENMO 300 Modernity in Literature (3) ; ENGE 3XX; and 3 electives at the 300 level. In addition to the 3 preparatory courses, majors may substitute one additional ENGL 100-level or 200-level elective for one 300-level elective,excluding period and national/cultural requirements. In addition, 3-credits earned in an internship through the English Department (ENGL 480 Internship (3) ) may count toward the major.

Students who major in English may choose one of three optional Emphases. The Emphases are designed to give students additional opportunities for professional development in fields related to the English major. Each Emphasis is comprised of 12 additional credits in required and elective courses, as described below. Other electives may also be selected in consultation with the chair of the Department of English .
