COMM 254 - Digital Culture Credits: (3) This course examines the forces that shape the culture of our digital world. It tours the social history of digital technologies, weighs the most influential philosophies of technology and digitality, and practices various research methodologies for analyzing digital communication and emergent technologies. Students will leave the class canny citizens of digital culture, able to participate in it without being used by its bad actors, being capable of telling moral panics about new technology apart from genuine ethical risks, of distinguishing between tech companies’ hyped-up talking points and cultural hotspots where digital media are truly changing our futures, and of performing original, in-depth research into case studies of technology and social change.
