THEOL 133 - Mary and the Saints Credits: (3) For both devout Catholics and curious non-Catholics, Mary and the saints are one of the more intriguing and often puzzling aspects of the Catholic tradition. Why are these people so special, and what do they do within Catholicism? This course introduces students to theology by means of these questions. We will primarily examine the biblical and doctrinal rationale for devotion to Mary and the saints, and explore the theological dimensions of popular devotions. The course will also include engagement with non-Western saints and attention to the role of Mary in our university identity. This course is open and welcoming to students who are brand new to theology as well as those who want to further enrich their theological understanding.
