This course reflects on the various ways in which black Christians across the African diaspora have responded to and been transformed by the call to follow Christ. We do this through close and holistic attention to the lives of black saints and of other exemplary individuals both Catholic and Protestant. Robust attention goes to these figure’s sociocultural context, the injustices they faced, and how this relates to contemporary problems. However, the course also seeks a complete picture of how God’s grace touched each complex individual’s capacities, desires, and concerns. We also reflect on the theological questions raised by these exemplary figures and explore how their lives are themselves an interpretation of the Bible.
